Objectives Long-term objective: to promote crop genotypes adapted to demands as food security; highly competitive agricultural products and improved farmer income Immediate objectives: To develop rice genotypes with high and stable yield, tolerant to major pests and diseases, tolerant to abiotic stress, and met the demand of sustainable development To develop good grain quality rice genotypes met the demand of domestic consumption and export
Mandates
- To conserve rice germplasm and some major crops in rice-based cropping patterns
To study and promote new crop varieties tended to sustainable development and accordingly met the demand of the national goals To implement non-degree training and degree one (PhD level) on genetics and plant breeding To foster cooperation mentioning research and development on crop breeding and genetics under both international and regional levels
Research Activities
Collection, preservation, evaluation, documentation and utilization of rice germplasm and others are implemented to address biodiversity, effective using gene pool in crop improvement Genomics and functional genomics are well studied in addition of modern tools of proteomics, transcriptomics, bioinformatics to promote performance of molecular genetics, genetic engineering applied in conventional crop breeding. Introgression the target genes from related wild species and landraces aims at to enhance biodiversity and enlarge gene pool for crop breeding in addition of mutation, somatic and gametic variation, quantitative genetics tools to meet the demand of promotion of high yielding genotypes with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress, high nutrient quality for biofortification Gene transformation, introgression, advanced backcross, marker-assisted selection, genetic gain assessment, QTL analysis, sequencing of target DNA fragments, primer designing, fine mapping are carried out to continuously improve the protocol of crop breeding Apply Biotechnology in plan breeding : Function genomic , Genetic engineering Genetic technology , Genetic molecular and check GMO for crops . To facilitate lab conditions for students, PhD scholars, post-doct scholars implement their dissertations on genetics and crop breeding Multi-location yield trials are carried out to analyze GxE interaction, then some pilots on new varieties are also set up in target areas International projects (themes) are implemented in target sites mentioning biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, rice genotype sharing, etc…
