Soil Sciences
Thursday, 20 November 2008
Research areas:
  • Research and development on all aspects relating to soil science in the Cuu Long delta ( soil chemistry, soil fertility and plant nutrients and environment);
  • Short and long-term training;
  • Scientific service.

Research objectives:
  • Nutrients disorder diagnosis;
  • Research and development on improvement of soil fertility, soil conservation for sustainable agricultural production;
  • Study on methods of treating soil and water pollution to ensure clean agricultural product while protecting communal health.
  • International cooperation in research activities relating to soil science;
  • Training and transfer new technologies for agricultural production.

On-going study:
  • Study on cultivation methods to fortify aroma of fragrant rice.
  • Study on yield potential and use of taro as feeding for animal and livestock production in the Cuu Long delta.
  • Treating and recycling of water and solid wastes from catfish ponds to improve livelihood and protect pollution in the Cuu Long delta.

Research Highlights:
  • Rice cultivation package for alluvial soil in the Cuu Long delta.
  • Silty soil or soil having light structure (less clay) should apply potassium regularly otherwise K will be a limiting factor for rice production in the Cuu Long Delta
  • Magnesium and zinc has been detected to fortify aroma of fragant rice whereas iron has reverse effect.

Cooperation:
  • In country: Institute of Agriculture for South Vietnam (IAS), Soil Science Institute, Cantho University, An Giang University.
  • Foreign countries: Bonn University (Germany), University of Tokyo (Japan), Murdoch University (Western Australia), CIRAD (France), IRRI (Phillipines).
